Money & Payment
Alipay and WeChat Pay for visitors
Set up a mobile wallet before you land, test it with a small payment, and keep a second way to pay.

Cash still works in many places, but a lot of daily spending in China happens inside Alipay or WeChat. Setting one of them up before the flight is easier than doing it on hotel Wi-Fi after a long arrival.
What usually works
International visitors can often verify an identity and link a foreign card inside the app. Success depends on the card, the bank, and the merchant. A successful setup is not a promise that every stall will accept it.
Test before you travel
Make a small payment while you still have another way to fix a failed verification. If the app asks for a mainland phone number you do not have, stop and use the international visitor flow rather than guessing.
Keep a backup
- A second card
- Some cash for small vendors and transport gaps
- The hotel's payment desk as a fallback on arrival day
Step by step
- 1
Install the app and complete identity checks
Download Alipay or WeChat from your phone's official store, then follow the in-app steps for international visitors.
- 2
Link a card and make a small test payment
A tiny purchase before the trip shows whether the card, verification, and merchant type will work.
- 3
Carry a backup
Keep some cash and a second card. Do not assume every taxi, temple, or market stall takes the same wallet.
Frequently asked questions
Can a foreign card work in Alipay or WeChat Pay?
Often yes, after you verify your identity in the app and link an international card. Acceptance still varies by shop, city, and app version. Keep a backup such as cash or another card.
Should I rely on one payment app?
No. Set up at least one mobile wallet before you land, and carry a second way to pay. Small vendors and transit gates do not all accept the same method.
