What to Order When You Don't Speak the Menu
A short, practical guide to eating well and confidently across China's regional cuisines.
Zhong Miao Journal·September 20, 2026·2 min read
You do not need to know every character on a menu to eat well in China. A little curiosity, a few useful gestures, and a willingness to share the table go a long way.
Start with what the room is eating
Look around before ordering. Noodles, dumplings, whole fish, and seasonal vegetables often reveal what a restaurant does best. Pointing is perfectly acceptable, especially when paired with a smile.
Order for the table
For two people, begin with two savoury dishes and one vegetable, then add rice or noodles as needed. Regional food is meant to be explored together, one plate at a time.
